water in afar, ethiopia

while afar used to be one of the most fertile parts of ethiopia, people in this region are now suffering of both, far too little rain and strong floods from the highlands, leading to heavily eroded land and loss of their traditional livelihood as pastoralists. GIZ in cooperation with its partners introduced water spreading weirs in the region, a system of easily constructed and cleverly placed weirs that help slowing down the speed of water and saving the precious soil, thus the life of the people and their animals.
